[html]Hier haben wir ein Interbiew zum IDW Comic Transformers: Monstrosity mit den Machern Flint Dille und Livio Ramondelli für euch.

In 2012 IDW went digital with Transformers: Autocracy, the story of Optimus Prime’s ascent to greatness and leadership of the heroic Autobots. Now the follow-up series is about to be unleashed and once again we travel back in time to a darker, dirtier and altogether more dangerous Cybertron than the one we’re used to… and that’s saying something!

Co-writer Flint Dille and artist Livio Ramondelli give us an insight into Monstrosity!

“The Decepticons are defeated. Zeta is gone. Optimus Prime is in control, but what you realise is that keeping the peace is sometimes harder than winning the war” – trust Flint Dille to find a cloud in every silver lining! It shouldn’t come as a surprise to any longtime Transformers aficionado; this is the man who killed Optimus Prime just half an hour into the original animated Transformers movie, only to oversee his return as an crazed robotic-zombie for a third season episode!

In fairness, Flint was still involved when Optimus Prime returned again in more triumphant fashion towards the end of the animated series’ run;

“Optimus is a great character, but what people tend to forget is that great characters often have times of incredible adversity, inability, unpopularity – how will Optimus hold up? Monstrosity is about what happens after the war – it can go well or it can go badly. It seems like it should go well…”

Seems like, eh?

Parallels are often drawn between Optimus Prime and other real world heroes, and Flint notes similarities between Monstrosity’s stand-up citizen and another great from history, who himself was in the Oscar spotlight recently.

“I recently watched ‘Lincoln’ and I can only speculate on what would have happened if he’d lived, but reconstruction wasn’t pretty. Monstrosity takes place in a world that needs to be rebuilt; not a hopeless world, but a world kind of teetering on the edge of both renaissance and oblivion, kind of like the real world today.”

Transformers comics have been enjoying their own renaissance period in recent times under IDW’s stewardship and artist Livio Ramondelli has certainly played his part in making the stories look as striking as they have done, with Autocracy in particular having a quite distinctive look – chunky yet detailed action-packed panels, with quasi-painted style colouring particularly effective at setting the tone. Explosive reds and dramatic golds, moody blues, contemplative natural greens and soothing, cleansing whites – would Monstrosity continue along a similar vein?

“Monstrosity picks up shortly after Autocracy, and so the planet will look very similar to how it did in the previous series, featuring the same sort of colour palettes,” explains Livio.

Although the story will definitely take us to some new locations – the characters will go to areas of the planet we’ve never seen before, and so the design of those environments will certainly look strikingly different, they’re going to discover a side of Cybertron that isn’t just cities. Also, there will be a major location in Monstrosity that is neither Cybertron nor Earth, and it definitely has its own colour palette, amongst other monstrous properties!”

Skywarp - 8/5/2013 um 21:01

[html]Jetzt haben wir hier das Frage uns Antwort Panel zum IDW Comic Transformers: Monstrosity Heft 6 mit Livio Ramondeli.

Q: Is the wayyou’re working on pages for MONSTROSITY changed at all from when you didAUTOCRACY last year?
LIVIORAMONDELLI: It’s a sortof constant evolution, but I’m not doing anything intentionally different than AUTOCRACY. I’m just trying to make the art look better andbetter, as well as clearer. I’m always trying new little things here and thereto really pop highlights on the characters, and make the images brighter ingeneral. Even when dealing with dark shadows.

Q: It’s clearyou sure like playing with light and colors on your pages. Was this somethingyou taught yourself or something you learned at school?
LIVIORAMONDELLI: Definitely both. I studied color in school, but I spend more timethinking about it now. I’m always looking for new ways to balance out thecolors and play with light. It’s tricky with TRANSFORMERS because they’re sobright, and you’re always fighting pages looking like clashing colors.Sometimes it works better than others.

Q: How muchleeway does the script give you—do you follow what’s on the script page, or dowhat you feel is best to make it work?
LIVIORAMONDELLI: The scripts always call for specific shots, but the page layouts(and the size of the panels) is my call. Also Chris and Flint are great atletting me change things when I feel like something might work better. I’malways looking to make each shot important, and so I’ll sometimes cut outpanels that I feel we can cover in a line of dialogue and that gives us thespace for more money shots. For example, in MONSTROSITY #5 we initially saw acouple panels of Scorponok and Blitzwing about to blast the door open to therefinery. But I suggested that we just show the door exploding, which gave us acool reveal, more space, and didn’t cost us anything since your mind fills inwhat came before.

Q: In thisissue, we hear about a sixth member of the Dynobots team—Skar. Was it asurprise to see this new character appear and how much did you enjoy theprocess of designing this previously unseen team member?
LIVIORAMONDELLI: It wastricky, because you’re adding something to a classic group of characters andtrying to make it feel natural, which is always hard. At first I actuallydesigned Skar to look closer to Swoop (since Swoop tends to stand outdifferently from the other Dinobots, and it made sense to me that another wouldlook like him). But it was Chris’s desire to really see Skar as Grimlock’sclose friend as well as resemble him a bit physically. Like he could have beenas strong as Grimlock, and tragically didn’t make it. So he ended up being abit of a cross between Grimlock and Swoop—his head has some Swoop elements toit. I wasn’t surprised by the reveal as I knew from the beginning of the storySkar would appear. It was just a question of hopefully making it natural.

Skywarp - 22/5/2013 um 23:19

[html]Jetzt haben wir ein Interview mit Livio Ramondelito zum IDW Comic Transformers Monstrosity Heft 7 für euch.

Q:We’re halfway through MONSTROSITY. The first series that you worked on withChris Metzen and Flint Dille, AUTOCRACY, focused on Orion Pax becoming OptimusPrime. Why did the focus was shift to Megatron and what happens to him, whileshowing bits and pieces of Prime on Cybertron?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: Itfelt like a natural progression in the story to shift things a bit more toMegatron’s story. He suffered a big defeat at the end of AUTOCRACY, and soseeing how his followers respond to that interested us. Plus, we wanted tocontrast that against Prime having a more political battle ahead of him, andshowing the hardships of leadership for a divided world.

Q:Megatron has obviously suffered prior to the series and gone through a littleredesign? How did you come to the design we see him in now?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: Weknew that he’d repair himself with pieces he’d scavenged on Junkion, and so wedefinitely wanted him to be asymmetrical. By the end of his time on that world,he’s almost unrecognizable as Megatron… his colors have rusted and hisDecepticon logo has burned away. He really needs to find himself once again, essentially.

Q:There have been a few new characters making themselves know so far in theseries. What led to those characters coming into the series rather than others? Are any of them you just wanted to see in there?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: Absolutely.Trypticon, Sharkticons and Quintessons were the ones I most wanted to include.I felt like they lent themselves well to the story we wanted to tell, and theyadded a more monstrous side. We knew they’d be in there from way early on. Andthen others like Dai Atlas and Bulkhead grew organically from the story, wherewe felt like we had a place for them that also felt natural.

Q:The Dynobots are going though a bit of a journey in the series. What is itabout this team that makes you want to creative something with them involvedafter all the previous material with them involved?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: Ithink they’re a very classic part of the TF universe. Funny enough, they’re allover the place now in the various games and the TV shows, but when we firstdecided to use them they weren’t really around. And as Chris said it, MONSTROSITYis about a man becoming a monster (Megatron), and a monster becoming a man(Grimlock). I always loved that.

Q:We have the Quintessons making their first real appearance in the IDW universe, after being previously teased at the end of SPOTLIGHT: WHEELIE in 2008. Was thisa deliberate nod to the 1986 TRANSFORMERS animated movie (after the nods we sawin AUTOCRACY)?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: Nota deliberate nod, exactly, since we use the Quintession Pentius in a verydifferent way, here. Though, of course, we drew from the movie since, visually,we felt there were some great things we could do that hadn’t been seen in [the IDWcomics] before. And we wanted to certainly tease the Quintessons without givingtoo much information about their race… certainly leaving more to be revealedabout them in future stories.

Q:Taking into account what you established in Autocracy, was there much researchthat had to be done about Megatron to see what was already established abouthim in the IDW world so you could figure him out?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: MEGATRON:ORIGIN is a big favorite of mine, and so I knew a lot of his history prettywell. And then of course James wrote the great “Chaos Theory,” which furtheradded to it. Our take on him is meant to reflect those but also portray him asincreasingly dangerous… a truly growing threat. [Editor] John [Barber] is greatat jumping in and suggesting things or filling us in on some continuity we mayhave missed.

Q:With Dai Atlas, he has some backstory in the IDW universe, but also some gaps. When figuring out his role in this story, do you think it was the intention toshow he was more than we previously may have thought? He’s proven to be a hellof a fighter.
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: Wecertainly wanted to shed more light on him. And also, TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS INDISGUISE #17 that I did with John [also on sale today!] will also give us bigmoments with him in the past. I think he was perfect to use in this prequelbecause we know he left Cybertron… and now we get to see the why and how of it.And there’s a sadness to seeing him and Prime trying to work things out becausewe know it doesn’t succeed. Their final moment together in Monstrosity is anemotional favorite of mine.

Q:Given that you worked with Flint and Chris before, has the creative processbeen any smoother for you all this time around, now you know how each otherbetter?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: We’remuch closer just as friends by this point. In AUTOCRACY, it was really theirstory and I was coming in to draw it. But they embraced me warmly, and let mereally suggest a lot of stuff… it was the most fun I’ve ever had in my career. And now with this current series, it’s only gotten better. It’s a truecollaboration and I feel very much a part of the story. Chris and Flint areawesome guys, and I’m very thankful for their generosity and friendship.

Q:What is your favorite stage of the creative process when putting the seriestogether?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: There’sa few… I love the early stages of just chatting about any insane idea andseeing if we can connect the dots. I also love when the issues start coming outand the reader responses arrive. And then finally finishing a series is a veryrewarding moment since you know that story will live on forever and hopefullybe passed around to new readers.

Q:Would you say working in a digital format, with less page space than a regularcomic, is a plus or a minus point for both you?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: It’sboth. Certainly, there are times it can be a minus because you want to do bigmoney shots and sometimes don’t have the space. But as a plus, it makes usreally concentrate on the screen time and make every moment count. As a result,I think the pacing in these issues feels very fulfilling… we cover a lot ofstory and readers seem to really love that.

Q:Tease us about future issues of MONSTROSITY. What would you like to say aboutthe series to anyone looking to pick it up for the first time?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: Obviously, the revelation that Trypticon has been discovered is a huge clue for the restof the series. We wouldn’t show something like that and have it not wake up.And we’re aiming for a level of destruction with Trypticon that hasn’t beenseen before. Optimus Prime will really be put to the test, as he has beenthroughout the series. Megatron will of course return to deal with his betrayalat Scorponok’s hands… and he isn’t the merciful kind.
And for anyone who hasn’t read ityet… I’d say it’s the story of a world coming apart at the seams, showing how asociety can destroy everything they love and not even be fully aware of it.

Q:Can you see the story that you’re telling branching out even further into thewar, maybe offering up a third digital series after this one?
LIVIO RAMONDELLI: Withoutsaying too much… I think there’s a very good possibility…

Skywarp - 1/6/2013 um 11:05

[html]Wir haben hier ein Interview mit Livio Ramondelli, indem er über das IDW Comic Monstrosity spricht.

ServoSlag: Before a series like this kicks off, do you get to sit down with the writers and discuss story plots/directions and have input on the book story-wise?
Livio Ramondelli: With Autocracy, Flint and Chris had the story mapped out pretty tightly before I came on board. I added little action beats here and there, but nothing major in terms of story.
With Monstrosity, we knew we wanted to continue our story but there was a much looser idea where to go from the end of Autocracy. We sat down and planned it out together. It was really fun to kick ideas around. We initially started with rough beats..Megatron on a dark quest.. Optimus Prime dealing with a dangerous political arena..Sharkticons..Trypticon..Quintessons..and the story emerged from there.
Later once the series was actually being drawn, we continued to adjust the story toward the end..altering which characters did what, etc. Chris and Flint have been beyond generous and collaborative in letting me suggest ideas in both of the series. But with Monstrosity, it really felt like I got to add a lot of story elements and that makes the series something I'm really proud of.

ServoSlag: How does the Shockwave Spotlight issue work in this same universe? It looked like the Dinobots got their "dino" alt modes (somewhat) in that series, but it looks like something similar might be happening with them in this book.
Livio Ramondelli: We did our best not to contradict Spotlight:Shockwave. The Dinobots do get Dinosaur Alt-Modes in that issue..whereas in Monstrosity they are more 'infected' with something that causes them to manifest beastly forms. In my mind, it's different. They're in control of their Dino modes in a way that they aren't in Monstrosity. It basically came down to us wanting to have the Dinobots in our story and wanting them to resemble in some way classic Dinobots. We didn't want them to turn into tanks or cars. But we hope our story doesn't feel like it contradicts them getting Dinosaur alt-modes millions of years later.

ServoSlag: The last time we saw a Quintesson was at the end of Spotlight Wheelie. How does Pentius play into that thread or is that a story for another time?
Livio Ramondelli: It's been a long time coming to seeing a true Quintesson in IDW. Pentius isn't necessarily tied to the tease we got in Spotlight:Wheelie. We give a few more clues about the Quintesson race from what Pentius says and does, but we definitely wanted to leave a lot more open to explore. The scene when Megatron returns after being dragged beneath an acidic sea by Sharkticons, for example, hints at a major thing the Quintessons are capable of.

ServoSlag: Do you sit down with Flint and Chris and read through back issues or does IDW have a "Transformers Bible" easily accessible to you guys for creative purposes?
Livio Ramondelli: We tend to do our reading separately, but we shoot each other links to things online all the time. We try to meet up for dinner when we can to chat in person. We also see each other on panels so that gives us some time here and there. As for a "Transformers Bible", that would be called John Barber..who is there to answer our questions whenever we have them. John is an invaluable 4th member of Monstrosity and Autocracy.

ServoSlag: When designing characters for the book, do you get free reign, or does Hasbro have to give their approval before it goes any further?
Livio Ramondelli: We're given a very comfortable reign. Hasbro has been a blast to work with, they've never vetoed a design or a story point we wanted to do..and they don't even suggest routes or characters for us to use. Michael Kelly and Co. have been just great to us.

ServoSlag: Obviously a third mini series is probably a given at this point. Autocracy was focused on Prime and Monstrosity focuses on Megatron, what can we expect from a third series?
Livio Ramondelli: Without saying too much, I think it's safe to say Chris, Flint and I would love to do a third one to round out the trilogy. Given the time period following where Monstrosity leaves off, it's reasonable to assume that the third series would be a full on war story showing two battle-hardened commanders going head to head.

ServoSlag: What can we expect from the rest of the series?
Livio Ramondelli: It's hopefully not spoiling much from the reveal in issue 6, but Trypticon will arrive in an especially epic and violent fashion. Megatron will return to reclaim his throne and confront Skorponok. The population of Cybertron will be tested in a variety of ways, and Optimus Prime will be brought to his knees by the challenges of governing.

ServoSlag: What are the pros and cons of working on a digital series like this?
Livio Ramondelli: The pros are the immediate access of it..how quickly people can buy it ( and therefore much easier for new readers to try it). It never sells out, and is available 24/7. The downsides really aren't too bad. Especially with the eventual printed editions, people can get this story on their shelf as well as their IPad. And the shorter page counts really focus our storytelling to hopefully make every image count.

ServoSlag: What other Transformers comics can we expect from you in the near future?
Livio Ramondelli: I know for certain I'm doing more Robots in Disguise work coming up..but that's all I can say at the moment!

CBR News: Flint, you're finally capping off the trilogy you started with co-writer Chris Metzen in "Autocracy" and "Monstrosity." What's going down IN the final chapter, "Transformers Primacy?"
Flint Dille: "Transformers Primacy" is the third installment in the "Autocracy" Trilogy. In book one, Orion Pax (to become Optimus Prime) and Megatron forge a dangerous alliance to stop the tyrant Zeta Prime. Of course, the victory conditions for one war always set the stage for the next war. In "Monstrosity," Orion Pax becomes Optimus Prime, and Megatron goes on what amounts to a hero's journey on Junkion with a mysterious mentor named Pentius. "Monstrosity" forges what we now know as Optimus Prime and Megatron. They assemble their forces and what results is the battle for "Primacy." One shall rule.

You called "Monstrosity" the "Empire Strikes Back" of the "Autocracy" trilogy. Is "Primacy" your "Return of the Jedi," then?
Well, it's the third part of a trilogy, so it's also "Return of the King." It is both an epic battle (as big as we could make it) and a very personal encounter between Optimus and Megatron in which the ending recapitulates "Autocracy" and sets the stage for the war that will continue for a million years.

"Primacy" is skipping the digital-first phase "Monstrosity" and "Autocracy" debuted through. Did switching from 6-page stories to 22-page stories force you to change your writing style?
My primal training as a writer was in animation. We thought of stories as three acts (with a commercial literally between the acts) and cliffhangers and threads that stitch them together. I still think of stories that way. A lot of that comes into "Primacy." It might be why people feel a sense of "G-1" in the book, even though it is a completely different continuity.

Megatron's finally back in "Primacy" -- is he the same evil tyrant we know or has his exile humbled him at all?
Interestingly, Megatron's issue is that he has his own demon that needs to be exorcised. Of course, doing that may unveil the real demon that is him. Have to read it to see.

Does Prime finally mature into the Prime we know in "Primacy?"
That would be telling. Let us say that Prime has a pronounced character arc in the trilogy.

The Decipticons now have the titanic Trypticon on their side. How strongly does this tip the scales in their favor?
Trypticon is something truly dangerous. The interesting thing is that he might be as dangerous to Megatron as to Optimus. It all depends on how Megatron plays it.

What does it feel like to finally be finishing your "Transformers" epic? Did you get to tell the entire story you wanted to?
Well, given that we thought we were doing a 48-page all digital comic as a one-shot (that was the first idea), I'd say I did about 10-times (well maybe 8-times) what I thought I was going to do!
It's been great. Chris [Metzen] and I had a long conversation after this, and the thing that was interesting is that the "Autocracy" trilogy was an ongoing thread through whole different eras of our lives. It was a transitional project for us.
I'm not sure about Livio [Ramondelli]. He was the same Knight of Cybertron, from beginning to end. Great to work with. Extraordinarily talented. But yeah, if some future PhD candidate wanted to do literary psychic archeology from this piece, it's fascinating how the trilogy paralleled real life events for Chris and I.

What part of Transformers lore would you like to explore next?
I have some unfinished business with Marissa Fairborne, Flint and Lady Jaye, for obvious reasons. I'd also like to return to some of the other planets we visited. I love Transformers fighting monsters, Transformers fighting giants -- that kind of stuff.

You also work on some pretty cool projects outside of comics. Can you tell us a bit about the genre-bending Google mobile game "Ingress?"
Well, its pretty much out now that I am creative lead on Google's "Ingress" game. It's a geo-mobile alternate reality game -- meaning it is played on GPS all over the world. We have millions of players now, and it is all set against an ongoing story that started with a think tank gone horribly bad. Or horribly good, depending on how you look at it. We use every medium known to man. We have videos, books, social media, real world object and, yes, comics. A mysterious fellow named Tycho is working on the new comic. Many don't believe he exists. I'm not sure, but somebody is doing some great looking pages.
Of course, some people don't believe that Ingress is a game at all. Don't believe them.
